Hostwars: A new beginning…

Strange title for a post you’ll probably say and you’ll be right. Last night found me battling my demons so to speak. I’ve been with a US hosting company (dreamhost) for a long time and they have served me well. I’ve been able to live with their occassional down time, the US time difference hasn’t been that much of an issue for me either. I’ve even gone as far as recommending them on to people.
In the past they’ve had network problems, electricity problems, they’ve had to deal with DoS attacks and Name Server Issues and god knows what else.
My problem .. I’m using a todo list app (not to mention all my sites I’m hosting with them … non critical ones) and its hosted on one of my sites. Fair enough … stuff (for want of a better technical term) starts to go slow. I assume its either NTL my broadband provider or its dreamhost. I think I can live with it. Things go slower. Things stop loading … things time out. This is unacceptable … I visit their website dreamhoststatus.com to find out whats going on and what do you know its down coming up with all sorts of errors connecting to mysql databases. I mean HELLO!!!! shouldn’t this site be hosted elsewhere ?
A quick check of the whois for that site shows their name servers are:
ns1.dreamhost.com
ns2.dreamhost.com
ns3.dreamhost.com
Shouldn’t this status page be running from another source than their own name servers I mean “hello” ?
Now my mail is out … for a good while before this I might add .. my website is down and all their websites are down even their status page. This is starting to affect my business.
I suddenly realised my customers probably wouldn’t stand for this from me. Once in a while its ok but this is getting more frequent. Their databases seem to be heavily overloaded, their promise of close to unlimited bandwidth seems a stretch. So I’ve decided enough is enough I’m switching and what do you know this site is now hosted on an Irish Hosting Provider BlackNight.ie we’ll see how this goes.
