I tend to read the BBC technology website quite a bit and was surprised to find the article Is stealing wireless wrong my NTL cable has been acting up recently … a lot actually when I came back from france I didn’t turn on my pc for a day or two and then was panic stricken monday morning when it wasn’t working. I was desperate to find net access as soon as possible .. and what do you know I find an open unsecure network. Do I make use of it ? thats for you the reader to decide
Later browsing my gmail account while my Cable was down … I did have one or two reservations … mainly to do with how secure the data I was transmitting over this network was but I figured it wasn’t that important what I was doing at the time.
Its interesting however to see some peoples responses on there …
If the signals enter my house are they not mine to do with as I want … I’m sending signals back sure but where exactly am I sending them ?
Did I ask to have these wireless signals being transmitted through me ? so should it not be a case of its up to people to lock down the range of their transmissions ?
In ireland it used be the case you were allowed to transmit radio signals up to 50 metersĀ but I’m unsure what current laws on all this are. Anything outside 50 meters is piracy ? So by this same logic isn’t what these people doing illegal.
They attack the argument that if you leave your car / house unlocked its inviting burglers in … but thats different in my eyes … thats tresspassing on other peoples property …
Now I would strongly disagree with attacking someone’s network to gain access to wireless as you are basically hacking (in the bad sense of the word)
Have a read of the comments on there … its got some interesting food for thought
